It’s October So Let’s Talk About the Summer
Happy OCTOBER! This summer was busy! After graduating from Creighton University with my BA in Studio Art and Political Science, I started an internship in affordable housing development and continued serving at SET the bar, I even picked up bartending as well. Between the jobs, trying to spend time with friends and family before we all disperse on our various post-grad endeavors, a couple big trips (Including one to see one of my biggest creative inspirations, Gerard Way, in my brief and fleeting former stomping ground of Seattle), two [minor] car accidents, and one [unfortunately less minor] concussion, I didn’t have as much time or bandwidth this summer for my art practice as I wished or envisioned. But as I always say, there is always something to do, and I still made a couple of things happen:
I spent a lot of my spare time putting together this website to document my artwork, events, and development! So it’s official, you can now find me at www.callaghancavanaugh.com (it looks like you already did)! I am so excited to share my work in this new and exciting way, and I will update it continually
I also spent some wonderful meditative hours at the Creighton Ceramics Studio making some vessels and reflecting on my time studying art there and how that has changed and informed the way I understand myself, the role of art, and my future path.
After these studio sessions, I would often spend some time writing about my relationship with different mediums and practices, excerpts of which you can find on this website in my artwork section!
Also this summer, I created a new basement studio space. It has been so nice to have a dedicated space for my work before I set off for the next adventures. I painted the floor bright red, put up halloween string lights, and taped all sorts of things up on the walls— Personalize Everything or Die With Nothing to Your Name— so I have been feeling right at home as I try to get back in the headspace to make some paintings. Not a ton of progress on that front, as my fragmented schedule is not conducive to the multiple hours at a time I need to really get into a painting. But I have the bones of some things.
Another Highlight from the summer was participating in the Ohheyarts pop-up sale on September 13th, where I had the pleasure of meeting some very talented local artists and selling my work to this lovely community of ours here in Omaha. It was very diy and just my exact style all around. I just loved being able to talk to people about my art in a sale environment that is a little more laid back and personal than my previous experience with Prints and Pots. I am so moved every time something I make resonates with a stranger. I don’t know if I will ever get used to it. I hope to be a part of more events like this in the future in Omaha and beyond!
Speaking of the future… this Sunday I am traveling to Lima, Peru, where I will be for the month of October and some of November, living with my amazing partner, who is living down there this year to play pro volleyball. I am so so excited for this very welcome change of scenery, and especially excited to have new experiences with art, culture, and nature that I can bring back home and into my practice. Many updates to come!
Following my time in Peru, I have another very exciting move planned! But I’ll keep it to one adventure at a time for the sake of how long this update already is… so stay tuned for that one.
Lastly, I just want to say a sincere thank you to everyone here in Omaha, my friends, family, coworkers, partner, professors, and this whole community for being so overwhelmingly supportive of art and of me as I navigate the horrifying endeavor that is being a post-grad in 2025. I promise I’ll make it worth your while!!! Sending Light and Love until the next update!!!
